Director of Policy & Engagement

What I do at The Royal College of Ophthalmologists

As the Director of Policy & Engagement, I lead a talented team responsible for the College’s strategic communications, marketing, policy and public affairs activities. I'm part of the Senior Leadership Team, so shape the College's direction as we work to raise our profile, influence stakeholders, and better support our members. I oversee everything from digital strategy and media engagement to internal communications and brand development - all to ensure our voice is joined-up, visible, and impactful.

Why The Royal College of Ophthalmologists

We’re looking for someone who can think strategically about visual identity but who’s also happy rolling their sleeves up and getting stuck in. This is the only design role in the College, so it suits someone who enjoys owning the full creative process - from concept to delivery. If you enjoy working across a wide range of projects, want to shape and evolve a brand, and thrive in a busy but supportive environment, you’ll fit right in.

Who am I?

I’m a communications and engagement specialist with over a decade’s experience in the third sector, developing multi-channel, insight-driven strategies to raise brand awareness, strengthen membership engagement, and influence policy and practice. I’ve worked in global and national healthcare charities, universities and professional bodies, always with a focus on accessible, impactful communication. I believe that strong, thoughtful design is key to telling compelling stories, which is why this role is so important to us.

Advice for prospective candidates

Bring your creativity, your ideas, and your energy. The College is an ambitious organisation with a meaningful purpose - supporting the delivery of excellent eye care for all - and there’s huge scope to make an impact through design. We’re a collaborative team, and we really value people who take initiative, communicate well, and want to keep learning. Show us how your work solves problems and tells stories, and don’t be afraid to share what makes your design perspective unique.
